Sling Alternatives 2026: When the Free Plan Is Not Enough

Kemal Özdemir

Sling is hard to beat on price: scheduling, time-off requests, shift offers and messaging are free for up to 30 users, and paid plans start at $2 per user. Teams look for alternatives when the free plan stops covering what they need, such as a time clock, shift swaps or automatic assignment, or when they want more than a shared calendar: a roster that follows their rules, or a product that is not tied to a restaurant POS company.

In short: if Sling's free plan does what you need, keep it. If you need more, the best alternative depends on the gap: Homebase for a free time clock on one US site, When I Work for low-cost per-user scheduling with Auto Scheduling, Connecteam for GPS clock-in in the field, Deputy for compliance and payroll, Findmyshift for a flat team price, and imRoster if you want the whole roster drafted by AI under your rest and fairness rules for a per-account price.

Every price below was read on the vendor's official pricing page on 19 October 2026. Prices change often and differ by country, so confirm before you sign.

What is Sling best at?

As of October 2026, Sling's offer is strong for small teams:

  • Free for up to 30 users: shift scheduling, long-term scheduling, time-off requests, shift offers, private messaging and announcements.
  • Premium at $2 per user per month ($1.70 on annual billing) adds a mobile time clock, shift swaps, unavailability, labour cost management, overtime tracking and group messaging.
  • Business at $4 per user per month ($3.40 annually) adds auto-assigning, kiosk time tracking, payroll reports and labour reports.
  • Paid plans bill only active users and are prorated when someone leaves; there is a 15-day free trial.

Why do teams look for Sling alternatives?

The free plan leaves out the basics many teams need

Sling Free has no time clock, no shift swaps and no unavailability. Adding them means Premium for every user, so a 25-person team goes from $0 to $50 a month the day it needs clock-in. Automatic assignment needs Business, at $4 per user.

Auto-assigning is not a rule-based roster

Business-plan auto-assigning fills open shifts with available people. It does not draft a weekly or monthly roster around minimum rest between shifts, night-shift limits, on-call duties or fair rotation of weekends, which is where healthcare, security and 24/7 managers spend most of their time.

Ownership and direction

Sling is now part of Toast, a restaurant point-of-sale company, and some reviewers report sync issues with Toast and bugs in the mobile app. Teams outside food service sometimes prefer a tool whose roadmap is not set by a restaurant platform.

What does a 10, 25 or 50-person team pay per month?

How to read it, and what it leaves out:

  • Figures are US dollar list prices for monthly billing, excluding tax, on one location. Annual billing saves 15% at Sling, about 20% at Homebase, roughly 18% at Connecteam and about 10% at Deputy.
  • Sling's free plan stops at 30 users; a 50-person team needs Premium at least.
  • When I Work's time tracking is a separate add-on not priced on its pricing page. Findmyshift's flat price stops at 20 staff.
  • imRoster prices are limited-time launch prices (regular $12, $45 and $110). Plans differ by monthly credit allowance (100, 500 or 1,500), not by user count, and every plan has the same features, clock-in included.

On price alone Sling is very hard to beat for teams under 30. The reasons to switch are features, not cost: a time clock without paying per user, automatic scheduling that follows your rules, or a roster you do not have to build by hand.

The best Sling alternatives in 2026, by use case

1. Homebase: best free time clock for one US site

  • Best for: US businesses on one site with up to 10 employees, or larger single-site teams that want a flat price.
  • Pricing model: per location. Free for one location and up to 10 employees; Essentials $30, Plus $70 and All-in-One $120 per location per month (as of October 2026).
  • Better than Sling at: basic time tracking on the free plan, and a flat fee that does not grow with headcount on one site.
  • What it lacks: the free plan caps at 10 employees; each extra location is another subscription; AI scheduling only on Plus.

2. When I Work: best low-cost automatic scheduling

  • Best for: small hourly teams that want Auto Scheduling without paying for a top tier.
  • Pricing model: per user. Essentials $2.50, Pro $5 and Premium $8 per user per month, 14-day free trial (as of October 2026).
  • Better than Sling at: Auto Scheduling and shift swapping on the entry plan, plus payroll and POS integrations.
  • What it lacks: no free plan; time tracking is a separate add-on.

3. Connecteam: best for field teams

  • Best for: cleaning, construction, home care and other teams that work across sites.
  • Pricing model: flat for the first 30 users, then per extra user. Free up to 10 users; Basic $35, Advanced $59 and Expert $119 a month (as of October 2026).
  • Better than Sling at: GPS clock-in and geofencing on the entry plan, and one flat price up to 30 users.
  • What it lacks: free plan caps at 10 users; automatic shift assignment only on Expert.

4. Deputy: best for compliance and payroll

  • Best for: multi-site teams in Australia, the UK and the US that need time, pay and compliance in one system.
  • Pricing model: per user. Lite $5, Core $6.50 and Pro $9 per user per month, $30 minimum per monthly invoice (as of October 2026).
  • Better than Sling at: compliance features, demand forecasting, biometric clocking and award interpretation.
  • What it lacks: it costs several times more than Sling for the same team.

5. 7shifts: best if you are a restaurant leaving Sling

  • Best for: restaurants that want sales-based labour targets, tips and POS integration.
  • Pricing model: per location with headcount caps. Free Comp plan up to 15 employees; Essentials CAD 39.99, Pro CAD 79.99 and Premium CAD 134.99 per location per month as shown to us (as of October 2026).
  • Better than Sling at: restaurant workflows such as tip management and sales-based forecasting.
  • What it lacks: outside restaurants its specialist features add little; every plan has a headcount ceiling.

6. Findmyshift: best flat price for micro teams

  • Best for: teams under 20 that want a predictable monthly bill.
  • Pricing model: per team. $27 a month for up to 20 staff, with a free plan for up to 5 (as of October 2026).
  • Better than Sling at: a paid plan whose price does not change as you add people, up to 20.
  • What it lacks: scheduling is manual, with no automatic or AI scheduling.

7. imRoster: best for AI-drafted, rule-safe rosters

  • Best for: managers who build a weekly or monthly roster by hand, especially in healthcare, care homes, security, factories and 24/7 operations.
  • Pricing model: per account, credit-based. Starter $5, Growth $20 and Pro $50 a month at limited-time launch prices (regular $12, $45 and $110), with a 30-day free trial and no card (as of October 2026). Every plan has the same features.
  • Better than Sling at: drafting the whole roster from a plain-language description of your team, shifts, time off and rules; never scheduling past the rules you set, such as 11 hours of rest between shifts or night-shift limits; spreading nights and weekends fairly; clock-in, attendance reports and swaps on every plan; and a price that does not grow with headcount.
  • What it lacks: no free-forever plan, so for a small team that only needs a shared calendar Sling Free costs less; no payroll, POS integrations or timesheet approvals; no biometric, QR or kiosk clocking (staff clock in from a phone or browser, with location checked against a geofence and flagged, not blocked). It is also a younger product with fewer third-party reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sling really free?

Yes. As of October 2026, Sling's shift scheduling is free for up to 30 users, including time-off requests, shift offers, private messaging and announcements. The free plan does not include a time clock, shift swaps, unavailability or auto-assigning.

What is the best alternative to Sling?

It depends on what Sling is missing for you. Homebase adds a free time clock for one US site up to 10 employees, When I Work offers Auto Scheduling from $2.50 per user, Connecteam suits field teams that need GPS clock-in, Deputy suits compliance and payroll, 7shifts suits restaurants, Findmyshift offers a flat team price, and imRoster drafts rule-safe rosters with AI.

How much does Sling cost after the free plan?

As of October 2026, Premium is $2 per user per month ($1.70 billed annually) and Business is $4 ($3.40 annually). Paid plans bill only active users.

Does Sling have automatic scheduling?

Sling's Business plan includes auto-assigning, which fills shifts with available staff. It does not draft a full roster from rules such as minimum rest between shifts or fair rotation of nights and weekends.

imRoster vs Sling: which should I choose?

Choose Sling if your team is under 30 and a free shared schedule is enough. Choose imRoster if building a fair roster under rest and night-shift rules takes hours each month, you want clock-in and attendance reports included, and you want a price that does not grow with headcount.
